In 1868, Charles Goodnight invented the first “chuck wagon,” which catered “fixins” for the cowboys in a cattle drive. The cattle drive through Parker County would become known as the Goodnight-Loving trail.
Oliver Loving’s dying wish to his friend, Charles Goodnight, was to be buried in Parker County – his home. Goodnight brought the body 600 miles by wagon for burial in Weatherford’s Greenwood Cemetery. The story was inspiration for the novel ‘Lonesome Dove’ by Texas author Larry McMurty.
Boise Ikard, who served with Goodnight and for whom the character “Deets” was modeled, was also laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery.
