Weatherford is located on Interstates 20 and 30, just 25 miles west of downtown Fort Worth and 60 miles west of Dallas. Weatherford is a demographic and economic component of the Fort Worth-Arlington Metro-Division of the Dallas-Fort Worth MSA and is an integral part of the North Central Texas economy. Weatherford is located 220 miles north of Austin and 300 northwest of Houston.

This strategic location allows Weatherford to retain its distinct historical and western heritage while still being a contributing part of the urban Metroplex. Weatherford is an “Exurban” Community – a growing rural community with an established economy with growth tied to a large MSA/Metroplex – and is an emerging regional shopping center of the western Metroplex. Weatherford’s location has proven desirable for new business and residential development and growth.

Weatherford and Parker County are historically and still a “bedroom” community to the western Metroplex, as over 45 percent of the resident labor force commutes east to Tarrant County, Fort Worth and the Metroplex to work for Fortune 500 companies, major national and regional corporations and many area businesses. Weatherford’s location affords residents quick access to multiple major cultural and entertainment venues across the Metroplex and region in all directions.

Major Thoroughfares

Weatherford is well located on Interstates 20 and 30 and has a great proximity to the major interchange with the north-south Interstate 35W in downtown Fort Worth, just 25 miles east of Weatherford. Interstate 35W is a designated NAFTA superhighway and is a critical connector thru San Antonio to Laredo, TX, to Mexico and north to the Midwest.

State Highway 171/FM 51 (city Main St.) connects north, 38 miles to U.S. Highway 81/287 and south, 40 miles to U.S. Highway 67. U.S. Highway 180/80 (old east-west interstate) crosses with IH20 in Weatherford and connects to west Texas, eastern New Mexico and to IH40 in the West Texas Panhandle.

In early 2011, the city opened the new Jack Borden Way, a four-lane urban street by-pass from FW Highway (U.S. 180) to Santa Fe Drive and extending to Eureka Street and Foster Drive.

Beginning in 2009, the City of Weatherford, in partnership with TxDOT, has led the completion of a $65 million-plus transportation construction project centered at the intersection of S. Main (SH 171/FM51) and IH20. This multi-phase project includes about 4.5 miles of new E-W three-lane urban/one-way IH20 frontage roads and new ramps from S. Main St. (Exit 408) to Santa Fe Dr./Clear Lake Rd. (Exit 409) to S. Bowie Dr. (Exit 406); new elevated U-turn lanes at the bridges; the S. Main St. road and bridge widening from College Park Dr. to IH20 to Fielder Dr./Causbie Rd.; a new Holland Lake Rd. cross-over bridge; and the new Fielder Dr. collector street/by-pass (south loop) from Bethel Rd. to Tin Top Rd. to S. Main St. to the IH20 new frontage road. The project is 70-80 percent complete, with many phases 100 percent complete.

Parker County is constructing a new six-mile West Loop – the Ric Williamson Memorial Highway – from N. Main (FM 51), west and south to IH20, connecting west of S. Bowie Drive (exit 406). Phase 1 was complete in late summer of 2011; Phase 2 should be complete by late summer 2012. The final road phase should be complete in the summer of 2013 and the IH20 Interchange after that. This project will provide enhanced highway access from the Industrial Park on west FM 920 (West Fourth St.) to a direct IH20 interchange connection, and will encourage new business growth along the route in several sectors of the western city.

DFW International Airport is located 52 miles east of Weatherford via IH20 and IH30, is served by most major carriers and is the main hub for American Airlines. Dallas Love Field is located 65 miles east of Weatherford via IH20 and IH30, is the home hub for Southwest Airlines and hosts other major carriers.

Fort Worth Alliance (Industrial) Airport is located 45 miles northeast of Weatherford via IH20, IH30 and IH35W. The complex includes a Foreign Trade Zone and intermodal facilities supporting rail, interstate trucking and air transportation.

There are three FBO/corporate and general aviation reliever airports to the Metroplex accessible from Weatherford – the Mineral Wells Municipal Airport, 18 miles west; the Fort Worth Meacham International Airport, 30 miles east; and the Spinks Airport in Fort Worth, 38 miles southeast. All provide P-IFR, NP-IFR, VFR, Flight control, 6,000-foot runways (longest - 7,501 feet/shortest - 4,000 feet), hangar hundreds of based aircraft and offer multiple full-service FBOs, multiple maintenance facilities, flight schools, AWOS, car rental and easy access to motel facilities.

Rail/Freight Service

The Union Pacific RR main line extends through Weatherford from the northwest to the southeast and provides daily, multiple-train freight portage to the northwest Industrial Park on three company spurs. This UPRR rail line connects east to the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC) and the Tower 55 intersection, near downtown Fort Worth. Freight services include unit and intermodal interchange with the BNSF Railway and passenger service aboard Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer and Texas Eagle. BNSF and Union Pacific local switchers serve nearby customers and the Alliance Intermodal Terminal to the north.
