Things To Do
Visitors come to our beautiful valley to enjoy the cool shaded quietness of our cypress-lined streams or the splendor of our Hill Country vistas or just the relaxed, laid back atmosphere of our slower pace. After arriving, however, they find that there is so much more to Wimberley beyond the charming friendliness they encounter. There are activities for the whole family.
A good place to start your visit is at the Visitors Center located on Ranch Road 12, just across Cypress Creek from the Wimberley Town Square. The friendly, helpful volunteers will assist you in planning activities for your stay.
If you’re an art lover, you’ll want to be sure to take in the art galleries that have made Wimberley an artists’ haven and the best arts community in the Hill Country. You can see the world’s largest collection of sculptures by Frederick Remington by appointment only at Pioneer Town.
Wimberley has two outstanding venues for critically acclaimed live theater. EmilyAnn Theater—west of Wimberley on Ranch Road 2325—each year hosts Shakespeare Under the Stars. This exciting, professional presentation attracts young actors from around the country to perform in two of the Bard’s plays. Audiences enjoy these and other EmilyAnn Theater presentations in a natural setting under the stars. EmilyAnn is also the location for the annual Christmas Trail of Lights with more than 100 separate sparkling displays of holiday spirit.
The Wimberley Players perform dramas, musicals and comedies throughout the year at their new Wimberley Playhouse on Old Kyle Road near the Square.
During summer months, visitors can enjoy first run movies under the stars at the Corral Theater, near the intersection of Ranch Road 3237 and Flite Acres Road. Movies at this unique outdoor theater start at dusk on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The annual Wimberley VFW rodeo is one of the largest in the state and is held on the weekend closest to July 4. Three nights of bull riding, bronco busting, calf roping and all of the other events that have made rodeos great are on tap with fun for the whole family at the rodeo grounds at Veterans Memorial Park on Jacobs Well Road.
Be sure and take in the daily glassblowing demonstrations at the Wimberley Glass Works. Watch talented artists manipulate molten glass into works of art, then visit the nearby shop to take home a piece of your own.
Every Friday night is bingo night at the VFW Hall on Jacobs Well Road. Food and beverages are available, and the cash prizes make for an evening of entertainment of the whole family.
If golf is your game, then you need to head out to Quicksand Golf Course in Woodcreek. This beautiful, tree-lined 19-hole course draws golfers from all over the state.
If good live music is your thing, there are several places in Wimberley to go. The Cypress Creek Café on the Square hosts top musical acts every weekend, and Charley’s on Ranch Road 2325 is the scene for weekend bluegrass jams. Ino’z on the banks of Cypress Creek near the Square has live music on Market Day weekends.
There are two local wineries where visitors may tour the vineyards and wine-making facilities and sample some of the finest in Texas wines.
For those who like outdoor fun, two magnificent natural swimming holes, the Blue Hole in Wimberley and Cypress Falls in Woodcreek, welcome swimmers with cool clear waters. There’s tubing and kayaking on the beautiful Blanco River. Creek Nature Trail offers shaded hiking in a natural setting along Cypress Creek, and a hike to the top of Old Baldy will provide a unique panorama of the Wimberley Valley and surrounding hills. For a truly “old West” flavored experience, there are several local ranches that offer horseback riding.
The newest attraction in the area is the Veterans Memorial Plaza located on a scenic hilltop at EmilyAnn Theater. The memorial consists of a United States Flag, a Texas Flag and the flags of each of the armed forces, as well as one representing prisoners of war and those missing in action. The dramatic design of the memorial surrounds the flags with bricks honoring veterans of the military services, both living and dead. The memorial, begun in 2007, is intended to raise awareness of those veterans who have served our country and the sacrifices they endured to insure the freedoms that we enjoy as Americans.
