Great transportation and easy accessibility to nearby cities make Franklin County a convenient place to live or work. Roanoke, Virginia is just 30 minutes away and Greensboro, NC about two hours. Both are reached by U. S. 220, a four-lane divided highway that bisects Franklin County from north and south and links with I-81 and I-40 to the north and south, respectively. Highway 40 bisects the county going east and west, and the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway marks the county’s western border.

Five airports serve the county. Roanoke Regional Airport offers the only jet service in Western Virginia. Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, is just 70 miles south of Rocky Mount. Smith Mountain Lake Airport at Moneta, 25 miles east, has a 3,500-foot runway, Blue Ridge Airport at Martinsville, 30 miles south, has a 5,000-foot runway, and Lynchburg, about 75 miles away, provides a gateway to central Virginia.

The Norfolk Southern Corporation runs a main line railroad north and south through the county, linking the area with other major population centers. And more than 30 major freight carriers serve area businesses.
