Although Franklin County is rural, its healthcare is high-tech. The Franklin County Health Department operates programs to promote good health, including free blood pressure screening, pregnancy testing, and state-mandated immunizations for children; free well-child clinics, and community health education programs. Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital in Rocky Mount provides 24-hour emergency care and has board-certified physicians in all major medical specialties on staff. Part of a regional healthcare system, it is just 20 minutes by ambulance from the regional Level I trauma center in Roanoke. Established in 1952, the 37-bed primary care facility recently completed two major expansions: a $7 million renovation and the construction of a 40,000-square-foot medical office building. It recently won the prestigious National Health Care Quality Award. Other resources in the county include a dialysis center, perinatal education center, home health services, elder care services, chiropractic care, a surgical center and extended care facilities.
