This beautiful 18th-century Georgian-style mansion served as a Union headquarters during the Battle of Fredericksburg, where Clara Barton and Walt Whitman joined in the treatment of hundreds of wounded soldiers. Open daily, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., except New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission free; $2 to view film for those aged 10-61, $1 for those older than 61, children 10 and younger free.

Encompasses four major battlefields of the Civil War. Exhibits and films about the battles may be found at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center on Lafayette Boulevard or at the Chancellorsville Visitor Center on Route 3, 12 miles west of Fredericksburg. The park is open daily, except Christmas and New Year’s Day. Hours vary. Lake Anna Winery

Located on State Route 208, three miles east of Lake Anna, the winery is owned by the Heidig family, who has been growing wine grapes since 1983. After years of backbreaking labor, the winery opened in 1990. An elegant tasting room was completed in 2001. Lake Anna Winery produces a variety of wines, including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and specialty offerings such as Monroe Chardonnay and Washington Merlot.

The owners, Skip and Cindi Causey, are Widewater residents who had a dream of opening up their own winery. “Dream talk,” their daughter Chelsea called it. The Causeys trace their interest back to the early 1990s when they started visiting wineries in the Napa Valley and Sonoma regions of California. They based Potomac Point Vineyard and Winery on multiple Mediterranean cultures, Italian, French, Spanish as well as American – specifically Napa and New Orleans. Open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Closed Tuesday.
