Recreation

Golfing

Nature and recreation complement each other well in an area with scenic rivers, acres of wooded parkland and lush golf greens. Lake Anna, one of Virginia’s largest lakes, and the rivers that wind through the region – the Potomac, Rappahannock and Rapidan – are major recreational areas. Several parks and golf courses are located near these and other waterways.

Beach swimming, sailing, tubing and canoeing are popular pastimes for people of all ages. Adventurers also enjoy waterskiing and whitewater rafting. Naturalists and historians guide educational water excursions, and anglers can reel in anything from bass to walleye.

The Parks & Recreation departments offer residents fitness programs, community sports leagues, athletic fields, and courts for tennis and a variety of sports. Other recreational pursuits throughout the region include camping, hunting, rock climbing, skydiving, hiking, biking and horseback riding.

For those who prefer the more leisurely pace of golf, challenging layouts for all skill levels can be found at the region’s public and private courses. Championship courses, offering full-service clubhouses and complete practice facilities, have been praised by reviewers. Public courses include Augustine Golf Club, Lee’s Hill Golf Club, The Gauntlet Golf Club at Curtis Park and Cannon Ridge Golf Club.

Recreation

Some families with “get up and go” attitudes opt for indoor activities at entertainment centers that have diversions such as laser tag, bumper boats, miniature golf, roller skating and ice skating. The YMCA offers a wide range of activities – including swimming, youth programs and adult fitness. Fitness centers help residents maintain active lifestyles.

The University of Mary Washington offers the finest in spectator sports – including lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, baseball and softball. Many of its athletes have been named All-Americans. Semipro teams play in the area, and professional sporting events, horse racing and NASCAR racing are just outside the region.

The State Fair of Virginia, which is held in the fall, recently moved to Caroline County and attracts more than 200,000 people!
