Putting Students First

Families in the Mount Vernon-Lee area are proud of their public school system, and with good reason. The Mount Vernon and Lee Districts are part of the Fairfax County Public School System, which has received national and international recognition for excellence. Twenty-seven elementary schools, four middle schools, and eight special-education centers are located in Mount Vernon-Lee. Many private and parochial schools are also in the area, including Brentwood Academy, Browne Academy, and Aquinas Montessori School.

Mount Vernon and Edison High Schools offer the International Baccalaureate Program, a pre-university course of study with a worldwide reputation for preparing students for college-level courses. Hayfield Secondary School, the largest school in our area, serves students in grades 7-12, and houses a planetarium that is used by all area students. Bryant Adult/Alternative High School offers a standard and advanced high school diploma with day and evening classes available. In addition to offering traditional vocational programs, Edison and West Potomac High Schools sponsor academies that offer professional and technical studies in courses that prepare students for jobs in information technology, health services, and criminal justice.

The Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Business and Industry Relations encourages and fosters cooperative efforts between schools and local businesses, benefiting not only the students and businesses, but the community as a whole. Each school has a minimum of one business partner that plays an active role by assisting faculty, administration, and students, and enhancing their educational experience.

Students who want to pursue higher education close to home have several options. George Mason University, 15 miles away, offers over one hundred degree programs. Northern Virginia Community College, the second largest community college system in the United States, has campuses located in Annandale, Alexandria, and Woodbridge, with plans for a medical technology campus near the Springfield metro. The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech Graduate Centers also are just 14 miles away.
