Recreation facilities include public parks containing over 400 acres and 16 playgrounds. The Petersburg Recreation Department offers instruction in games, arts and crafts, as well as organized basketball, softball, baseball, youth leagues, bowling and volleyball.

The city of Petersburg is the home of the Petersburg Sports Complex, which hosts many local and national softball tournaments. The complex is also home of the Petersburg Generals, a summer collegiate baseball team competing in the Coastal Plain League.

The YMCA of Southside Virginia has facilities for swimming, health club activities, and racquetball, handball courts; nearby outdoor recreation areas include Lake Chesdin, and Pocahontas State Park.

Lake Chesdin lies west of Petersburg, behind a dam on the Appomattox River. Winding through beautiful wooded shorelines and boasting some amazing lake front homes, Lake Chesdin is a calm lake comfortable for swimming and boating.

Pocahontas State Park is about 20 miles from Richmond. The Swift Creek is at the center of the park, which is a wildlife management area. Here residents and visitors can enjoy all the fun of the great outdoors like camping, boating, and fishing.
