There are approximately 3,000 military personnel and 3,800 civilian personnel that are employed by Fort Lee. Some of the area's leading employers include: Southside Regional Medical Center, Wal-Mart, Brenco, Inc., Boehringer Ingelheim Chemicals Inc., Poplar Springs Hospital, Virginia Linen, Titmus Optical Co., and Ukrop's. While the region's access to resources makes it an excellent choice for any business, there are several industries that are concentrated successfully in the area. Industries in the Petersburg area include metals, biotech, plastics, telecommunications and chemicals. Petersburg welcomes new businesses to the area. There are four industrial parks providing over 200 acres of land for business sites. In 1982, the Commonwealth of Virginia established an Enterprise Zone Program to encourage business start-up, recruitment, and expansion in selected areas of local municipalities. Petersburg was awarded an Enterprise Zone in 1985 and 1988, offering state and local tax relief, local regulatory flexibility, and infrastructure development.
