Education

A dedication to lifelong learning is experienced on the Peninsula, which hosts several public school districts and private institutions. These schools have a commitment to providing a sound environment favorable to student success and a goal of preparing students for life after graduation.

Hampton City Schools (HCS) – Based in the city of Hampton, HCS is composed of 23 elementary, six middle and four high schools—which includes two magnet schools, four fundamental schools, a performance learning center and two alternative schools at the middle school and high school levels. More than 20,800 students are enrolled at HCS, with 1,689 teachers providing exceptional leadership in the classroom. Among the many choices of study, HCS offers an award-winning Robotics Program (the only program of its kind in Virginia), along with an opportunity for year-round education.

Newport News Public Schools – Nearly 31,000 students attend the five early childhood centers, 26 elementary, eight middle and five high schools of Newport News Public Schools. Each of the system’s schools are fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education. In 2009, Hilton Elementary received designation as a Blue Ribbon School, and for the fifth year in a row, all five high schools were listed among Newsweek Magazine’s top public high schools in the U.S.

York County School Division (YCSD) – Approximately 12,450 students harness the outstanding education provided through YCSD’s 19 schools. The system is an integral part of the community, offering volunteer programs at each school—the York Foundation for Public Education, adult education and the Life Long Learning Center. YCSD’s business partners supply schools with resources and assistance, and promote various school-related activities and initiatives.

Poquoson City Public Schools – All four Poquoson City Public Schools facilities have earned full accreditation from the Virginia Department of Education and Advanc-Ed, a regional accrediting agency. Nearly 2,500 K-12 students take advantage of excellent academic programming, along with ample opportunities to participate in a range of extracurricular and athletic activities.

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools – More than 1,600 full- and part-time employees are dedicated to providing the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools’ 10,500-plus students with the best in educational opportunities. Sixteen fully accredited facilities, including nine elementary, four middle and three high schools, make up the system—a number that includes the recent addition of a new elementary school and a new middle school in the fall of 2010.
