A diverse base of industries comprises the Virginia Peninsula—from the seafood industry of Poquoson and the strong aerospace industry of Hampton to the shipbuilding and advanced research businesses of Newport News and tourism in York and James City counties. Economic development opportunities remain on the grow, drawing in new businesses, industries and employees. Unmatched educational institutions, superior healthcare, a strategic location and an overall high quality of life are additional factors that have proven attractive for those inquiring about relocation and/or expansion on the Peninsula.
Military – The impact of military presence on the Virginia Peninsula is exceedingly significant, as the military accounts for as much as one-third of this region’s economy. In fact, Hampton Roads hosts one of the nation’s largest concentrations of military personnel. Langley AFB, the oldest continuously active air base in the country, is hosted by the 1st Fighter Wing and serves as the headquarters of the Air Combat Command. The AFB stretches over 2,900 acres and houses 8,800 military personnel and 2,600 civilian employees. The 800-acre NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton is a major research and development facility focusing on aeronautics, science, space exploration and space operations. Fort Monroe, positioned on the southeastern tip of the Peninsula, is the home of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), while Fort Eustis hosts a TRADOC Installation. The Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, U.S. Coast Guard Training Center and the Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP) are also part of the military presence on the Peninsula.
Supporting Our Businesses – Businesses located on the Virginia Peninsula have access to a number of business-oriented organizations and resources designed to provide support and ensure success. The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, along with numerous other area Chambers, provides a list of membership benefits, including networking and advertising opportunities, referrals and educational and informational workshops and events.
The Virginia Peninsula Chamber, as well as several other business organizations and local colleges, supports the Hampton Roads Small Business Development Center (HRSBDC), a non-profit organization offering technical assistance to the small businesses and entrepreneurs making up this region. The Peninsula is also well served by the Hampton University Business Assistance Center, which assists new and existing small and minority-owned businesses.
Hampton Roads Convention Center (HRCC) – The HRCC opened in 2005, simultaneous to the opening of a connected 295-suite hotel and 200,000 square feet of retail and dining development. The two-floor HRCC encompasses approximately 344,000 square feet of convention and exhibit space, which is comprised of 35 meeting rooms capable of seating up to 14,000 people. Notable spaces include the nearly 28,000-square-foot grand ballroom, 102,600-square-foot exhibit hall (which divides into three halls) and an intimate conference center. The center features 3,500 free on-site parking spaces and is in proximity to some 2,500 hotel rooms within walking distance.
Its location in the center of Hampton’s growing Coliseum Central retail district places it in the midst of an extensive economic development plan. Soon joining the convention center and hotel is the $200 million Crossroads Development, which will add a new full-service hotel and a 2,000-seat theater. And just around the corner is the Peninsula Town Center.
