Location & Transportation

location

Nestled within the southeastern portion of Virginia, and bordered by the York River, James River, Hampton Roads and the Chesapeake Bay, the Virginia Peninsula is afforded a prime location in proximity to various modes of transportation. Its position on the water places it close to three of the four busy terminals of the Port of Virginia, including the Newport News Marine Terminal, the Norfolk International Terminals and the Portsmouth Marine Terminal.

On land, commuters and travelers utilize the Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) service. HRT serves seven area cities and offers 64 fixed regular routes, Handi-Ride for those with a disability, the Norfolk Electric Transit (NET), the Paddlewheel Ferry, the Portsmouth Loop, the Metro Area Express (MAX), the VB Wave in the Virginia Beach resort area and TRAFFIX, an excellent car/van pool alternative. Greyhound and AMTRAK rail are available for riders looking to travel regionally or nationally, while the Yellow Cab Company makes getting around locally a cinch.

The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport has been a major asset to the Virginia Peninsula since its establishment during WWII, when it was part of the U.S. Army’s Camp Patrick Henry. Today, the airport offers non-stop commercial services to locations throughout the U.S. and beyond via four airlines. Two full-service Fixed Base Operators, Atlantic and Rick Aviation, Inc., provide exceptional services to corporate and general aviation aircraft based at the airport. Norfolk International Airport is another option for air travel in the area, offering commercial service from seven airlines, as well as general aviation services.
