Situated
at the south shore of Lake Superior on Chequamegon Bay in northwest Wisconsin
is Ashland, a town with a population of nearly 9,000. This area has attracted
tourists for decades, but recently, people are choosing Ashland as their
home.
Wisconsin is ranked in the top 10 as "the most livable state," with Ashland
as one of its communities that has a lot to offer. Here are thousands
of acres of northwoods land and hundreds of small lakes. Wildlife is abundant.
Ashland is a four-season community, with each season offering numerous
activities and opportunities. The Greater Ashland Area offers bicycling,
hiking, canoeing, sailing, boating, swimming, picnicking, fishing, golf,
cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowmobiling. And it offers
these things in an environment that many are searching for today.
Thanks to Lake Superior, the weather is moderate, meaning warmer winters
and cooler summers. This climate promotes great growing conditions for
strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries and apples.
Ashland is home to a diverse group of people who vary in professions and
interests. However, the residents all take pride in maintaining the unique
quality of life here. People are friendly and the pace is a bit slower.
Electric rates are third-lowest in the country. Homeowner insurance rates
are the lowest in the U.S., and auto insurance rates are fifth- lowest.
Meanwhile property values are rising, but most properties still may be
acquired at a reasonable price.
The schools are outstanding. High school seniors top the nation in ACT
scores. The high school dropout rate is one of the nation's lowest.
Healthcare is a priority.ot only are the medical services first-rate,
but hospital patient care costs are 20 percent lower than the national
average. Residents also have the fifth-best social health in the country.
In addition, there are major services and retail shopping within the city.
There are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Local attractions include
museums, theatre, a band shell and the Big Top Chautauqua, a 780-seat
tent theater where well-known performers as well as new talent entertain
during the summer season.
The Mural Committee has recently completed the sixth mural in the City
of Ashland. Locals and tourists alike enjoy this walking tour of Ashland's
history painted in mural form.
Lake Superior, the largest body of fresh water in the world, remains one
of the favored attractions with its sparkling, cold blue water that offers
a variety of year-round activities.
