Ashland is located at the top of the state on Lake Superior. This northernmost tip features acres of woods and miles of shoreline. A bald eagle may soar overhead and a wolf may howl somewhere in the distance. Ashland's location is ideal. The lake in summer attracts boaters, swimmers, jet skiers, and sailboarders. Year-round fishing is popular. The woods provide trails for hiking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Three major highways that provide for accessibility and convenience serve the City of Ashland. This efficient highway network has been instrumental in Ashland's growth and development as a regional focal point, especially in the manufacturing and quickly growing service sectors..S. Highway 2 connects the City of Ashland with Ironwood and Escanaba, Michigan to the east, and Duluth-Superior and northern Minnesota to the west. State Highway 13 links Ashland with the cities of Washburn and Bayfield to the north, and directly to Marshfield to the south, as well as providing east access to Wausau, Wisconsin Rapids, and Stevens Point. State Highway 63, which intersects with Highway 2 ten miles west of Ashland, connects with Hayward, Spooner, Eau Claire, and Minneapolis. While there is no Interstate connection with the City of Ashland, the U.S. and state highways provide for convenient access to the Interstate system at a number of locations. A regional airport is jointly owned by the City of Ashland and Ashland County. This airport services the City of Ashland and Greater Ashland Area. The John F. Kennedy Memorial Airport has two paved bituminous strips of 5,200' and 3,500'. A unique log terminal is staffed by a full-time manager and provides two instrument approaches and automated weather service.
