The City of Ashland has a Mayor/Council form of government, with a hired City Administrator. The city is the county seat for Ashland County.

At the state level, Ashland is located in the 74th Assembly District and the 25th Senate District. On the national level, Ashland is in the 7th Congressional District.

Ashland City Hall located in downtown is a historic brownstone. It was built as a federal government building back in 1894, later served as a post office and then a vocational school. It was renovated in 1975 for the city administrative offices.

The mayor is the chief executive officer of the city of Ashland. The Mayor's four-year term is an elected position. The city administrator is responsible for general overall administrative operations including city policies, management, budget, oversight planning, and economic development. The city clerk prepares materials for the council and committee, processes licenses, administers elections, handles insurance claims and is responsible for maintaining the official records of the city.

The deputy city clerks, the community planning and development department, assessment services, the building inspector, and the finance department perform other important duties.

The fire department provides 24-hour fire protection and EMS services. The police department is located in the City Hall building at 601 West Main Street, on the third floor. The Patrol Division provides police services 24 hours a day.

The mission of the police is to protect and preserve life, property and the rights of all citizens and visitors to our community while recognizing the need to be a positive role model as they embrace change in partnership with the community.
