Location and Transportation

While exploring the community, you’ll discover that Brookfield is a nexus of smooth roads, broad avenues and shaded boulevards that bring the world of commerce and industry to its doorstep. The vast concrete ribbon of Bluemound Road (Highway 18) is the east-west commercial artery that runs through the core of Brookfield, while Capitol Drive forms its northern boundary. Calhoun Road runs north and south, and conducts traffic through the civic heart of the city. When you need to use the freeway, Interstate 94 access ramps are just to the east of Brookfield Square Shopping Center and on Brookfield’s west side, linked to Highway 18. Interstate 94 provides convenient access east to Milwaukee and west to Madison.

If you need to use public transportation, both Milwaukee and Waukesha counties provide exemplary service.

The Milwaukee County Transit System, the City of Waukesha METRO Transit System and Wisconsin Coach Lines, Inc. operate local and express routes in Waukesha County. For those Brookfield and Elm Grove seniors who need a convenient, comfortable ride, Elmbrook Senior Taxi and service provided by the Waukesha County Department of Aging are a phone call away.

Air travel in and out of the Milwaukee Metro region is simple, safe and convenient. If your travel plans include destinations around the globe, then General Mitchell International Airport (located 17 miles southeast of the city) is the airport of choice. Mitchell International offers convenient passenger and cargo service to destinations near and far. With eight major air carriers (including the number one rated airline among business travelers, Midwest Airlines) and several regional carriers, reaching many non-stop and direct destinations daily in the U.S. and Canada from Brookfield is a breeze.

Corporate air travelers often choose to take advantage of one of three airports — Timmerman Field Airport (three miles northeast of Brookfield), Capitol Drive Airport (just to the north) or Crites Field (four miles west of town).

For corporate, private or general aviation needs, each features paved runways, top of the line services and convenient connections as an alternative to major airline hubs.

Many people are rediscovering the simple pleasures of taking the train, unwinding and enjoying the view. When they ride the rails, they start at the Amtrak station in downtown Milwaukee — less than 15 minutes from Brookfield, just off of I-94. Departing for Chicago daily, seven trains connect to destinations throughout the nation.

The new century is giving way to alternative modes of transportation, and Brookfield, true to its visionary heritage, is leading the way with the construction of a comprehensive bikeway system. More than 40 miles of what will become a 111-mile system have been completed, and will soon connect riders to virtually all points throughout the community and to the extensive trail network covering southeastern Wisconsin.
