Cedarburg’s ample shopping selections are perhaps one of its biggest draws. In fact, the city earned first place in the online Wonders of Wisconsin voting contest in 2008 in the “Best Shopping” category.
Tucked away in the heart of downtown Cedarburg is the scenic Washington Avenue Historic District, which provides a charming backdrop for a day or weekend stay of shopping and exploration. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the district’s many chic restaurants and quaint shops are nestled within stunning historic buildings, offering a wonderful mix of modern conveniences in an olden atmosphere.
Shoppers are invited to wander the tree-lined streets while browsing through more than 70 shops—many of which offer unusual or hard-to-find handcrafted items and gifts. A number of these businesses remember a simpler era, with the presence of a turn-of-the-century jewelry store, three popular confectionaries (one featuring old-time, handmade specialty candies), a store specializing in old-fashioned cookie cutters and much more. But this area is not just about antiques, as newer additions have been made to the shopping experience in the area. Stylish specialty products and unique offerings not commonly found elsewhere blend in flawlessly.

On top of these wonderful specialty boutiques, Cedarburg’s bustling arts scene is well represented downtown as well, with numerous galleries and studios making their mark. With this artistic presence, the city has earned its reputation as a thriving artists’ community. Peruse through the great Ozaukee Art Center/Brewery Works Art Complex and take in fantastic exhibits and workshops representing all media within one of the state’s oldest breweries. Many shops, including an artists’ co-op, offer distinctive and varied works of local artisans. A vital source in the arts community for over 25 years, the Cedarburg Artists Guild boasts an impressive 220 members.

Further opportunities for retail therapy can be discovered at Cedar Creek Settlement, a restored 1864 woolen mill that has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Open year round, patrons can take advantage of the offerings found through more than 20 shops, artist’s studios and restaurants, not to mention the flavorful tastes of the Cedar Creek Winery. One of the most noted small regional wineries in the country, Cedar Creek Winery encourages visitors to take a tour and sample its delicious Wisconsin wines, all the while enjoying the views of Cedar Creek.
