DeForest and Windsor are governed by their respective elected village (7 member) or town (5 member) board. The boards hold open public meetings twice a month. Each community has its own planning, parks, and public works/utility citizen committees.

The area is served by the professionally trained DeForest Police Department and Dane County Sheriff's Department. Programs such as a citizen's academy, mounted patrol, and DARE are just a few of the programs in which the local police departments participate. The 911 emergency system and a joint fire protection and emergency medical services department provide for area safety needs.
