Government in Fond du Lac

City of Fond du Lac

The City of Fond du Lac operates under a council-manager form of government, which provides residents with the responsiveness of seven elected officials and the skilled administration of a professional city manager. City and county government share an impressive white stone government center in the heart of the downtown area. County government is centered in an 18-member County Board of Supervisors — with members elected from 21 townships, nine villages and three cities. An elected Executive oversees the day-to-day operations of county government on a full-time basis.

The Fond du Lac Police Department has served the city since 1866 and resides in its home at 126 North Main Street. Their location provides the department with much needed space for a larger evidence lab and a new crime lab. The department has 71 sworn officers (including the chief) and 15 civilian employees. Among its sworn staff, the department has eight school liaison and resource officers that split time between area educational facilities.

A police bike unit and four police motorcycles are among the departments patrolling units. The department also has an honor guard, a S.W.A.T. team and a K-9 unit.

The department publishes the Neighborhood Watch newsletter during the summer months and provides additional information at www.fdlpolice.com.

The Fond du Lac Fire Department has 66 full-time firefighters that operate out of three strategically located stations. Thirty-three firefighters are trained paramedics and a countywide Hazmat response team (located in the City of Fond du Lac) has been developed. The department provides underground storage inspections, a smoke detector program that offers free smoke detectors and free installation and educational resources and programs.
