Other Things to do in Mauston

Fishing

Bicycling: Both the State of Wisconsin and Juneau County have developed extensive bicycle trails, almost all of which connect in Elroy, which is 12 miles from Mauston. These trails include: The Elroy-Sparta Trail, which was developed into the first biking trail of its kind in the nation; The 400 Trail, extending from Elroy east to Reedsburg paralleling the Baraboo River; The Omaha Trail, extending north from Elroy to Camp Douglas, named for the railroad company that once operated that line; and The Hillsboro State Trail, an interesting side trip for those riding the 400 Trail.

Fishing: Endless fishing opportunities with two of Wisconsin’s best kept secrets: the 2nd & 4th largest inland lakes in the State of Wisconsin, the Lemonweir River winding through the city empties into the Wisconsin River, and Lake Decorah, a smaller lake outside Mauston, an ice fisherman’s delight.

Golfing: Located right outside Mauston, is a challenging, well-maintained and beautiful 18-hole course, designed to be user friendly and allowing the average golfer a truly enjoyable experience. A real pleasure for the novice or skilled golfer. Union Center and Necedah also have golf courses.

Horseback Riding: Woodside Ranch, a real “dude” ranch, a perfect place for a family vacation, conference, corporate retreat or a relaxing daily ride.

At Red Ridge Ranch, you can enjoy a quiet trail ride with the family or friends, guiding you on 250 acres of scenic country, on a country setting away from the crowds.

Hunting: 91,000 acres of recreational land, 22,000 of which are owned by the county or local governments, all open to the public for hunting. Turkey hunting is popular, and Mauston’s location along the Wisconsin River makes it an ideal spot for duck hunting. The Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is open annually to deer hunting, and small game and waterfowl hunting. Thousands of Canada Geese, ducks and snow geese stop at Necedah every year.

Wildlife Refuge: Explore the secrets left by the retreating glaciers created about ten thousand years ago. Today, this complex of wetlands, openlands, and woodlands form the foundation for the Necedah Wildlife Refuge. Necedah is a Winnebago Indian word meaning “land of yellow waters.” Providing habitat for several endangered species, the Refuge also is a breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. Come in spring or fall to witness the spectacular waterbird migrations, or later in summer, the brilliant displays of wildflowers. Enjoy, learn, and reconnect to our natural world, right here in Juneau County.
