Marshfield Clinic TeleHealth brings providers in skin, lung and heart disorders, behavioral health and 40 other medical specialties to patients at Marshfield Clinic Mosinee Center. Interactive conferencing technology allows for patients, nurses and doctors to talk as if they are in the same room.“The cutting-edge technology that we have installed in order to do this is extraordinary,” said Gerald Grim, M.D., department chair at the Mosinee Center. Specialized stethoscopes to listen to breathing, otoscopes to look in ears and other advanced medical equipment allow for an electronic exam to occur over a digital connection. “This is equal to being in the same room as the patient,” said Dr. Grim.
“For example, patients with emphysema, asthma or other lung disease no longer have to travel to Marshfield for all of their care. A pulmonary specialist can do an electronic exam to review the patient’s history, listen to the chest, discuss current symptoms and make recommendations for treatment and follow-up care—all right here at the Mosinee Center,” said Dr. Grim.
“Costs of traveling for specialty care really add up, and many patients say they will go without the care if they have to travel,” Dr. Antoniotti said. “As a result, they may have more exacerbations of chronic illnesses and end up in hospital emergency departments.”
