Continuing that tradition today, the Chamber, through its many programs, events and community involvement, plays a proactive role in the development and promotion of the Mt. Horeb area while preserving the natural beauty and positive qualities of a small, midwestern town.
While Mt. Horeb has maintained its link to the past with the preservation of many of its antique buildings and homes, the Village is also an up-to-date, full-service community for its residents and those of nearby communities. The bustling business district and nearby mall, offer every type of business and service that a community needs to be completely self-sufficient. Mt. Horeb is especially proud of its municipal services, providing its own electric utility, police department, recreation department, public library and all-volunteer fire department. The new Fire Department facility houses the very latest in fire fighting and emergency equipment for its top rated EMS and Fire Department. The public school system is rated among the best in the state. Mt. Horeb residents enjoy a small-town atmosphere which brings with it a spirit of community and neighborliness. Residents take great pride in their community and actively contribute to the welfare of the Village through participation in the numerous organizations and churches which abound in Mt. Horeb. The community cherishes its residents of all ages. Families with children live side-by-side with retirees. Mt. Horeb actively assists senior citizens through its outreach program. Area people generously support programs which provide food and clothing to people in need.
From January through December, Mt. Horeb hosts many events and festivals that appeal to athletes, lovers of art, music and folklore, fun seekers and shoppers. Horeb's accommodations: a full service hotel with a large indoor pool, a mid-town motel or country-style bed-and-breakfast.
Besides offering a full-service community with unique shopping and attractions, Mt. Horeb also has several thriving area industries. The rural setting is home to numerous farming operations specializing in crop and livestock production as well as dairy farming. Along with the traditional farms, there are also specialty farms which,for example produce and process wool, grow organic produce, and bake their own breads. Apple orchards also thrive here. As a center of commerce for the entire area, Mt. Horeb supplies a full range of agricultural services. Many fine landscaping businesses are located here, even a nursery specializing in natural wildflower landscapes. As more people decide to build in Mt. Horeb, the construction trades continue to grow along with the population. Two major industries located here are PEC of Wisconsin (Plastic Engineered Components) and Midwestern Bio-Ag.
Mt. Horeb is fortunate to have a wide variety of housing options-from single-family homes of all sizes, both new and historic, to apartments, townhouses and condominiums. There are also special accommodations for elderly, low-income and disabled residents. Mt. Horeb is proud to be the site of The Homestead, the first senior cooperative in Wisconsin. Mt. Horeb is known for its excellent schools. Public schools include: The Ridgeview Early Learning Center (preschool), Primary Center (grades K - 2), Intermediate Center (grades 3-5), Middle School (grades 6-8) and High School (grades 9-12). The Middle School and High School are state-of-the-art facilities, with a new addition to the high school housing an auditorium and two gyms. In addition to several private schools offering excellent pre-school programs and day care, the Children's Community School offers Montessori instruction for ages 18 months to 6 years. For adults, the Madison Area Technical College offers a variety of local courses from crafts to computers. And for readers of all ages, the full-service Mt. Horeb Public Library provides the community with convenient access to information and electronic resources.
