Platteville’s government is structured with a Common Council and City Manager form of administration. Televised Common Council meetings are held bi-weekly and residents are encouraged to attend meetings and communicate with government officials.

The city’s Public Works Department efficiently builds and maintains infrastructure. The City of Platteville provides water, garbage, recycling, and sewer service. Along with major services, the city provides snow and ice removal, weed and tall grass control, and cemetery maintenance services. Further, Platteville’s Community Planning and Development Department assists with such services as planning and zoning, building inspection, and historic preservation.The Police Department in Platteville has 19 sworn officers who have good reason to be proud. Platteville enjoys one of the safest small-town environments in the United States. Platteville’s Volunteer Fire Department includes a dedicated and highly trained group of firefighters.
