The Portage Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to Historic Portage, a wonderful place to grow your business, raise your family or just visit. The area offers small-town charm, with residential neighborhoods and growing commercial and industrial business sites next to the beautiful Wisconsin and Fox Rivers. Our strong historical heritage offers an excellent environment in which to live and work. We are certainly eager to share this rich history with all who pass through.
Portage is located on a narrow strip of land between the Fox River and the Wisconsin River. Our historic background comes alive through many places of interest - the Portage Canal, the Historic Indian Agency House, Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters and Garrison School, the World War II History Museum, Women’s Civic League, American Legion State Headquarters & Museum and the Museum at the Portage. We’re home to two Pulitzer Prize winners—novelist Zona Gale and historian Frederick Jackson Turner.
Today, Portage, with a population of more than 10,000 and a regional population exceeding 55,000, is the county seat for Columbia County. Portage boasts of many outdoor recreational resources, wonderful neighborhoods and well-established industries that provide solid employment opportunities. Both residents and visitors can relax in one of Portage’s many parks, or take in the area’s beautiful scenery by walking or biking area trails.
Our historic downtown contributes to the history coming alive in Portage. You will find a variety of quaint niche stores, restaurants and specialty shops, all located next to our canal and levee walking path. Complementing the downtown area are many other dining establishments, specialty stores, entertainment venues and a variety of larger national retail chains located throughout the community.
You are sure to find entertainment options here, either taking in a movie at our seven-screen theatre or stopping in for an art show or play production at our Portage Center for the Arts. Keeping yourself active is easy. Take in a game of golf at one of our local courses, or during the winter months you can take part in curling at our local club or skiing at Cascade Mountain.
In Portage, you will discover an outstanding array of medical facilities, including Divine Savior Healthcare, a state-of-the art hospital. Quality educational opportunities are provided through the school district, parochial schools and the Portage campus for Madison College.
