I’m always in awe when I hike down the Pine River Recreation Trail and see cranes and herons strolling in the grassy area adjacent to the River. Other hikers and bikers greet me as I approach the walking bridge that crosses the river. This historic suspension bridge has provided a short cut to the downtown for nearly a century and holds a special place in everyone’s heart from the moment they feel the sway of this wonderful wooden structure under their feet. The aged wood resonates the passage of time…yet the manner in which it has been carefully maintained throughout the years has kept it from reflecting the burden of time.
I pause as the Pine River flows beneath me, and wave to a couple enjoying a canoe ride downstream. Further upstream, a trout splashes in the water just out of reach of a young angler on the bank. The occasional eagle soaring overhead is a welcome bonus.

World-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright was born here in Richland Center, and as I turn and survey the landscape, I have no doubt that these beautiful hills, with their terraces and bluffs, and the valleys filled with dairy farms and trout streams, must truly have been his inspiration.
Standing here, listening to children playing just beyond the trees, I realize that I am filled with the sights and sounds, the feel and the scents of the natural wonders of this amazing place. This is my Sense of Place.
