Proximity to Milwaukee opens wide cultural vistas to residents of Mequon-Thiensville. It’s only a few minutes drive to the city’s Performing Arts Center where folks can witness performances by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Florentine Opera Company, the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and the Milwaukee Ballet Company.

However, Mequon-Thiensville also enjoys its own neighborhood’s cultural variety. Concerts by Homestead High School’s concert band, its symphony orchestra, and its two choirs and a chorale always have all seats filled.

Gathering on the Green

Mequon’s annual “Gathering on the Green” is an exceptional cultural event held in mid-July. It features performances of the Milwaukee Ballet, Gathering on the Green Festival Orchestra and attracts thousands of area families to Rotary Park.

Pommerntag, a German heritage festival held in Mequon City Park at the end of June, attracts many families from throughout the Midwest. Sponsored by the Pomeranian Society of Freistadt, it celebrates German heritage, especially Pomeranian heritage, with concerts by an authentic German band, young German dancers, ethnic foods and refreshments, cultural exhibits, and genealogy displays. People of Pomeranian origins come in traditional ethnic dress, and good fellowship is the theme.

Fun Before the Fourth is the community’s big Fourth of July celebration held on the Saturday before the Fourth of July, featuring a daylong array of family-oriented events and activities. The day begins with a parade and culminates with a big fireworks display.

The Frank L. Weyenberg Library of Mequon-Thiensville is a cultural focal point in the two communities. The library offers story hours for preschoolers and special programs for school-age children. It has a special collection of hardcover and paperback books that appeal to young adults.

The library is part of the 14-member Eastern Shore Library System that allows patrons to draw on the contents of all 14 libraries. In addition, patrons can obtain information passes, permitting them one-day access to collections and information at over 100 public, academic, corporate, and medical libraries in the area.

Moviegoers have a choice of the latest movies at the North Shore Cinema on Mequon’s Port Washington Road. For a night on the town, Mequon and Thiensville have more than a dozen excellent restaurants whose menus offer everything from steaks and chops to ethnic foods and gourmet cuisine.
