Mequon-Thiensville college students have a broad range of higher education options in two in-town institutions, Concordia University Wisconsin and Milwaukee Area Technical College.
One of four campuses of the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), Wisconsin’s largest technical college, is situated on Highland Road, directly north of Thiensville in Mequon’s largely rural northern area. Approximately 48,000 students attend the college’s four campuses and numerous evening centers and community-based sites, or learn online.
More than 30 degrees, diplomas and certificates are offered at the MATC Mequon campus, as well as training for protective services personnel from North Shore police and fire departments. Mequon’s campus is home to several energy sustainability initiatives such as wind and solar, which provide a unique learning laboratory and cost savings for the college. The Office of Corporate Learning provides customized training to incumbent workers.

Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) celebrated its 25th anniversary in Mequon, having been founded in 1881 on Milwaukee’s near-west side before moving to Mequon in 1983. The sprawling, 192-acre campus on the shore of Lake Michigan has experienced tremendous transformation over the past few years, highlighted by the completion of a bluff stabilization project of its half-mile shoreline; Pro Grass turf athletic fields; and a new, $22.5 million residence hall with breathtaking views of the lake. Henry Aaron came home to Mequon where he resided during his heydays with the Milwaukee Braves to deliver the university’s 2008 commencement address.
Concordia provides a variety of educational opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students, emphasizing a liberal arts core curriculum and course offerings that provide educational and global experiences that cultivate personal and vocational skills. The curriculum is governed by sound educational standards and a mission to “develop students in mind, body, and spirit for service to Christ in the Church and the world.” One of CUW’s top priorities is a faculty and staff committed to taking the time to make each student grow—not only academically, but also as a person.
A 14-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures undergraduates will receive the personal touch that is expected in a quality, private college learning environment. The student body is comprised of students from 44 states and 26 foreign countries.
Concordia, affiliated with The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, awards Associate of Arts degrees, Bachelor of Arts degrees, Bachelor of Science degrees, master’s degrees, and doctorate degrees in physical therapy and nursing practice. More than 6,500 students are enrolled on the main campus and in its graduate and adult education centers and E-learning initiatives, making CUW one of the largest Lutheran universities in the United States.
Concordia offers 55 undergraduate majors and 14 master’s degree programs in areas such as business administration (MBA), education, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and music. The University encompasses The School of Arts and Sciences; The School of Business and Legal Studies; The School of Education; The School of Human Services; and The School of Pharmacy, a new facility scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2011-2012 academic year.
