Town Center Development

While Mequon and Thiensville are two distinct municipalities, they are one community in spirit,” states Stan Smith, Chair of the Mequon-Thiensville Town Center Committee.

In order to further solidify this relationship, the Mequon-Thiensville Area Chamber of Commerce initiated an open forum with business leaders and Village of Thiensville representatives in order to discuss the much-needed revitalization of downtown Thiensville. This meeting, held in January 1999, was the springboard to today’s ongoing Town Center Plan—a 10-15-year vision for the development and redevelopment of the Cedarburg Road and Main Street Corridor.

This project is led by the Mequon-Thiensville Town Center Committee, a group that was organized in 2003 with a mission “to strengthen the relationship between Mequon and Thiensville citizens by developing an approach to creating a central heart to the two communities,” says Smith.

“The goals for the Town Center include increasing the quality of life through establishing gathering places, restaurants, retail shops and recreational opportunities; emphasizing aesthetics by replacing unsightly, underutilized property with high-quality improvements; and increasing economic value by attracting valuable private investment, which increases property values and effectively expands the tax base,” explains Smith. “Business retention is also an important piece.”

The elements of the Town Center have been developed with one focus in mind: to create memorable places that offer long-term value. According to Smith, key elements of this vision include the development of a riverwalk along the Milwaukee River, the addition of new housing options, revitalization of key retail sites, the enhancement of the Mequon civic campus, the creation of design guidelines that will direct future private development, and the incorporation of gateway features near the Mequon Road/Cedarburg Road junction. The institution of public gathering spaces, a pedestrian-friendly design, public amenities and continuous streetscaping are also integral priorities in the Town Center.
