Mequon-Thiensville Education

Mequon-Thiensville’s public school system is one of Wisconsin’s top-rated school districts.

The Mequon-Thiensville School District, which serves approximately 4,000 students, operates three kindergarten through fifth grade elementary schools, two 6-8 middle schools, and one high school. The schools are centered in the more heavily populated areas of Mequon. One elementary school is located in the northeastern area, one elementary school and a middle school are located in the southeastern section, and an elementary and a middle school stand in the southwestern area. Homestead High School is located close to the center of the community on Mequon Road.

The curriculum of the elementary schools focuses on reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and computer literacy. These are augmented by health, art, music, and physical education. There is also a special program for gifted and talented students.

The same curricular focus continues in middle school, with the addition of family and consumer education, and engineering and technology. Two years of French, German, and Spanish are also offered, as is the opportunity to participate in band, orchestra, and chorus. Programs for gifted and talented students are also continued.

Students at Homestead High School choose from many different courses, including advanced placement courses, which offer opportunities to earn college credit while still in high school. Students can also take honors courses.

Qualified students can participate in a concert band, a symphonic band, symphony orchestra and four vocal groups. Courses in acting and theatre are also offered.

Students are encouraged to become involved in the numerous extracurricular clubs and organizations the school sponsors. The school fields a full roster of competitive sports teams.

More than 90 percent of Homestead High School graduates continue their education in some form of higher education, either college, university, or technical school.

The Mequon-Thiensville School District’s programs for students with exceptional needs seek to provide students with classroom experiences that develop their knowledge and skills to the maximum. Homestead High School’s transition program for handicapped students recently received state-level recognition.

Parents have high-quality alternatives to public education in several private and parochial schools located in the community and University School in River Hills. In addition, there are several pre-schools and daycare centers that provide educational activities for youngsters.

University School of Milwaukee is a private, independent, coeducational college preparatory school for children in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. With a 150-year tradition of academic excellence, students benefit from an outstanding faculty, small classes and a challenging curriculum. USM promotes the academic, artistic and athletic achievements of each individual student. Located on 120 acres, University School of Milwaukee includes a 400-seat theatre, an ice arena, athletic fields, cross-county trails, playgrounds, and Woodwinds, a five-acre outdoor environmental classroom.

Serving the families and community of Lumen Christi Parish, Lumen Christi Catholic School is located in both Mequon and Thiensville and offers educational opportunities for an average of 500 students between the ages of four years through eighth grade. The Thiensville campus is home to the Junior Kindergarten, Half and All Day Senior Kindergarten and First, Second, and Third grades while the Mequon campus holds Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth grade classes. Class sizes vary from 15-26 students per classroom, with two or three homerooms per grade level.

At Calvary Lutheran School the academics are challenging, the teachers are nurturing, the classes are small and the lessons learned are for a lifetime. Children from grades pre-K through 8 learn, grow and achieve in an environment enriched with Christian teachings and morals. It is an education devoted to preparing young minds and hearts for the world that awaits.
