Mequon is a city with a mayor-council form of government and an appointed city administrator. Thiensville is a village with a trustee form of government and an appointed village administrator. They manage their communities effectively, making them great places to live and raise a family.

Mequon-Thiensville is an enhanced 911 community. The Thiensville Police Department is headquartered in the Village Hall, adjoining Village Park on the banks of the Milwaukee River. Officers patrol 31 miles of village streets, protecting its residents. This service is enhanced by the Thiensville Special Police who volunteer their time for special events.

The Mequon Police Department patrols all 47-square miles of the city, protecting its more than 23,000 citizens. The department practices Community Oriented Policing.

Since 1998 the police department has offered a Citizens Police Academy. This program de-mystifies the police process and the criminal justice process. Graduates come to understand the reasons for specific police actions, enabling them to become ambassadors in the community,  ready to explain why certain police actions are taken. Graduates are encouraged to interact with the department and are invited to ride along with officers to continue the education process.

Mequon police work cooperatively with area school parents and Positive Parent Involvement (PPI), a program designed to encourage parental involvement in police-sponsored efforts. PPI’s Red Ribbon program offers positive alternatives to alcohol and drugs. Its Blue Ribbon program is directed at preventing child abuse. The department also conducts a bicycle safety program and operates a Safety Town.

A force of active volunteers forms the Mequon Police Reserve, a group who supports the department in various ways. They are present at civic functions, such as Pommerntag, Gathering on the Green, and high school football games to handle security and traffic control. Their support frees police for crime prevention and protection.

Staffed by a full-time chief and 50 paid on-call firefighters, the Mequon Fire Department serves the area from two strategically located stations. The department provides fire suppression, rescue squad, inspections and public education services. The Mequon Ambulance Department provides ambulance service in conjunction with the fire department rescue squads.

Personnel also volunteer their time to enhance the quality of life for residents of the community through special programs and community events that teach fire safety. During Fire Prevention Week, volunteers visit classrooms and childcare centers, and youth groups visit the fire stations throughout the year. Public education programs are developed as well, utilizing nationally recognized standards; topics range from “hands-on” fire brigade training to fire survival behaviors for the elderly.

The department is well equipped with three pumpers, each carrying a water supply; a mini-pumper; two ambulances with advanced life support; a boat; two snowmobiles; a dive trailer with a zodiac boat; and a safety house for use in training youngsters and others to escape from a smoke-filled building.

The Village is proud to provide the only paramedic service in Ozaukee County. Many of the department’s firefighters are trained EMTs and EMT-Is. These individuals man the two ambulances. They also offer CPR training and are present with their ambulances at major high school sports events.
