


Mequon is a city with a mayor-council form of government and an appointed city administrator. The Common Council is the duly elected legislative and policy-making body of the City of Mequon. The city administrator and his staff manage the city’s day-to-day operations. Thiensville is a village with a trustee form of government. The village has an elected president and an appointed village administrator. They manage their communities effectively, making them great places to live and raise a family.
Mequon-Thiensville is an enhanced 911 community. The Thiensville Police Department is headquartered in the Village Hall, adjoining Village Park on the banks of the Milwaukee River. Officers patrol 31 miles of village streets, protecting its residents. This service is enhanced by the Thiensville Special Police who volunteer their time for special events.

Mequon’s public safety departments strive to provide exceptional public service to residents of the community. Mequon has one of the lowest crime rates due to the commitment of the Mequon Police Department to make Mequon a safe and desirable place. The Mequon Police Department patrols all 47 square miles of the city, protecting its more than 23,000 citizens. The police department is equipped with Emergency 911 telephone communications and rapid-response time by courteous, highly-trained professional police officers. The police department offers a Citizens Police Academy program to residents.
The Mequon Fire and EMS Department provides fire prevention, fire suppression and emergency medical services to the community. Staffed by a full-time chief and 70 paid-on-call firefighters, the Mequon Fire Department serves the area from two strategically located stations. The department provides fire suppression, a rescue squad, inspection and public education services. The department uses a tiered response system for emergency medical calls.
The Thiensville Fire Department has a team of firefighters who are paid on-call. The department is well-equipped with three pumpers, each carrying a water supply; a mini-pumper; two ambulances with advanced life support; a boat; two snowmobiles; a dive trailer with a zodiac boat; and a safety house for use in training youngsters and others to escape from a smoke-filled building.
The Village is proud to share their paramedic service with the City of Mequon. The two communities provide a 24/7 paramedic service. Thiensville provides paramedic intercepts to other Ozaukee County communities. Many of the department’s firefighters are trained EMTs and EMT-Is. These individuals man the two ambulances. They also offer CPR training and are present with their ambulances at major high school sports events.
City of Mequon departments provide a variety of public service in the areas of general government, public works and community enrichment. The following are a few of the many services city departments provide:
The City Clerk office provides an essential link between citizens and their local governing body by issuing licenses and permits, and conducting elections.
The Finance Department provides professional financial management services as mandated by state statute and required by the Common Council, city departments, and other governmental units.
The Department of Community Development is responsible for policy analysis, long range planning, development site plan review, zoning code administration, economic development, landmarks administration, zoning code enforcement, geographic information systems (i.e., GIS), census/demographic coordination and general information processing relative to development and redevelopment within the community.
The city’s Public Works Department maintains the city’s infrastructure and works to improve the city’s streets, parks and sewer services.
The Highway Department maintains 210 miles of local streets and is responsible for maintaining traffic signals, signage, storm drainage, road pavements, pavement markings, and snow and ice control.
The Park Maintenance Department provides services to all city parks including ball diamonds, football fields, soccer fields and picnic areas.
The city operates a water utility bringing Lake Michigan water to several parts of the city, as well as parts of Thiensville and Bayside.
