

Viroqua
boasts a comprehensive retail mix of unique specialty shops and established
anchor stores. Here, consumers will find everything from antiques
to elegant furnishings, appliances, baseball caps and cowboy hats,
bridal gowns and brand name jeans. One can also find art supplies
and best-seller books, while snacking on everything from soup and
sandwiches to baby back ribs and char-broiled steak. You can also
enjoy a cup of espresso in a local coffee shop, sip on a cherry coke
at a 50s diner, or indulge yourself with a malt at the
dairy bar. June through October, the Viroqua Partners Farmers
Market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the parking lot
of the WWTC Campus. The market features fresh fruit, vegetables, bedding
plants, bakery products and handcrafted items.

Viroqua is nationally recognized for its excellent educational
opportunities. The public schools include two elementary schools -
Liberty Pole, a multi-grade country school, and a new city elementary
school. The local middle and high school are on the same grounds.
The school system offers a wide variety of academic subjects as well
as a technical and industrial education opportunities. Extra-curricular
activities are also available for all students.
There are four private schools in Viroqua: the Viroqua
Christian School, Cornerstone Christian Academy (grades K-12), the
Pleasant Ridge Waldorf School (grades K-8), which utilizes the German
Waldorf philosophy, and the Youth Initiative High School (grades 9-12),
which is a Waldorf-inspired alternative school started by a group
of students.
The Viroqua Campus of WWTC technical college is located
on Main Street, with a total enrollment of 150 full-time students.
Major divisions include business, human services, general education,
industrial-technologies and instructional support services. The main
campus of WWTC is located in LaCrosse, only 35 miles northwest of
Viroqua, with a total enrollment of 3550 full-time students. UW-LaCrosse
is a four-year institution of higher learning enrolling 8000 full-time
students and offering advanced Masters Degrees.
For students of all ages, the full service McIntosh
Memorial Library provides the community with quick access to information
and resources.

Sportsmen
know Viroqua is in the heart of some of the best Whitetail deer country
in the state. It also has a large turkey population. The region is
home to "the best kept secret in the world" pristine trout streams
and excellent fly fishing - only a few minutes from Viroquas
historic downtown. Its easy to enjoy the abundance of natural
resources and outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking,
camping, horseback riding, snowmobiling, canoeing, cross-country skiing,
skating, and swimming. Other activities include golf, softball, tennis,
and bowling. Picnicking in the park and hunting morels are two favorite
pastimes as well.

The
rich heritage and history of Viroqua is apparent in its neighborhoods
and homes. Mingling together on tree-lined streets one finds small
efficiencies, modest mansions, prairie ranches, and two-story family
homes. Whether of sturdy frame construction or solid brick, these
homes vary in price to meet the needs of the entire community. All
Viroquas homes have unique charming character and reflect their
owners tastes and pride.

Viroqua
and area residents are fortunate to have the highest quality health
care available. The community boasts two clinics, one hospital with
24-hour emergency and urgent services, and two nursing homes. Also
available are several massage therapists, acupuncturists, and other
professionals who use homeopathy and herbal medicines in their practice.
There are 21 physicians, as well as numerous physician
assistants, nurse practitioners and a nurse midwife who support Vernon
Memorial Hospital. The practitioners include an orthopedic surgeon,
and a specialist in the detection, treatment, and prevention of osteoporosis.
The hospital has private birthing rooms complete with jacuzzis, and
an exercise center and fitness programs open to the public.
