The business of education is an important part of Wauwatosa’s identity as a first-class city. Busy parents can enlist the services of exceptional day care and early childhood learning centers. At the primary and secondary level, families may choose from a wide variety of award-winning private, public and charter schools.
A leader in public education, the Wauwatosa School District supplies outstanding academic programming to approximately 7,000 K4-12 students. The district employs a number of award-winning faculty members who lead classrooms in its nine elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. In 2007, Wauwatosa East High School was designated a Blue Ribbon School, one of only five in Wisconsin. These quality schools are accompanied by the district’s first charter school (the Tosa School of Health Science & Technology), an alternative high school program and the Tosa School of the Trades, which provides a mix of academic curricula with technical and employment-oriented classes for 11th and 12th graders.
The Wauwatosa School District is truly a cornerstone in the community with a rigorous curriculum infused with high standards. In addition to traditional courses, schools offer gifted and AP courses, special education, work-related programs, ESL courses and a variety of electives in areas such as the arts, music and theater, to name a few. Enhancing the student experience beyond the classroom is just as important. Students take advantage of an exhaustive range of extracurricular clubs and activities, including competitive sports, band, orchestra, the student newspaper and a variety of academic and service-oriented clubs.
The Wauwatosa School District also places a strong emphasis on expanding educational opportunities into the community. In fact, the district has invested in important partnerships with county institutions and facilities positioned within the Milwaukee County Medical Complex, providing education through the River Hills School to patients aged three to 21 who are admitted to the Milwaukee County Child and Adolescent Services Center. The Plank Road School provides an educational program for students placed in shelter care through St. Charles Youth & Family Services. The district’s Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin School Program reaches children who are chronically ill or will be spending five or more consecutive days in the hospital. Each of these programs is supplied to students for varying lengths of time—from one day to several weeks or months.
In 1900, the Education Foundation of Wauwatosa (EFW) was formed by a group of community and business leaders to strengthen and support the overall educational quality of Wauwatosa Public Schools. The organization provides funding and grants to support teachers and schools with creative and innovative teaching ideas and encourages new approaches to excellence in education.
