Health Care

Though neighboring Milwaukee is home to a multitude of renowned medical resources and hospital campuses, West Allis and West Milwaukee residents don’t have to leave town to access award-winning health care. The community is filled with excellent medical professionals dedicated to the health and well-being of this Midwestern area. Primary-care physicians, dentists, chiropractors, specialty-care doctors and many others have made a home here, ensuring local residents don’t have to go far to receive exceptional patient care and treatment.

Aurora West Allis Medical Center anchors the local health care community, offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient care services. The full-service hospital has been named as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals in 2008 and again in 2009 (Thomson Reuters), and has also been named one of the best community hospitals in the U.S. in 2010 (Becker’s Hospital Review). In additional to the hospital campus, locals have access to an office of the Aurora Medical Group and a walk-in clinic at the Aurora Health Center in West Allis.

Rogers Memorial Hospital, Inc. is Wisconsin’s largest not-for-profit, private behavioral health hospital. Rogers Memorial Hospital-Milwaukee provides inpatient, partial hospitalization and day treatment services for children, adolescents, adults and older adults. Rogers Memorial Hospital-Oconomowoc is nationally recognized for its residential treatment centers including The Eating Disorder Center, The Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Center, The Herrington Recovery Center and The Child and Adolescent Centers. In 2009, its medical staff of more than 80 psychiatrists, physicians and psychologists provided services for more than 6,700 children, teens, adults and older adults.

Columbia St. Mary’s is sponsored by Ascension Health and includes several hospitals and many community clinics, two of which are located in West Allis. Both West Allis and Gateway Medical clinics are conveniently located and provide an array of services. Staff offers the latest technology and innovative treatments within a nurturing environment of support and compassion for patients and their families.

Froedtert Hospital operates the Lincoln Avenue clinic in West Allis which is a primary-care clinic. Its specialties include endocrinology, family and internal medicine, general surgery, nephrology, obstetrics/gynecology, urology and a breast clinic. Froedtert is committed to maintaining the highest standard of patient care, while holding costs below market averages.

The Greater Milwaukee Free Clinic provides free medical care and pharmaceuticals to low income, working people in the Milwaukee area without medical insurance or the ability to pay for medical care. The intention of the Greater Milwaukee Free Clinic is to help people who are working to sincerely help themselves and their families. The clinic is staffed by volunteer professionals.

Protecting the Public’s Health

The West Allis Health Department serves to protect and promote the health of West Allis citizens. Established in 1906, the Health Department improves the health status of its citizens through services focused on prevention, communitywide education and assuring a healthy living environment. The Health Department protects the community from communicable disease outbreaks and environmental hazards and provides dental health services, health education programs and preventative health services. The Health Department is located at 7120 W. National Ave. and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The West Allis Senior Center is also part of the Health Department. This Center promotes a healthy quality of life where aging is viewed as natural, positive and purposeful, and provides services that focus on the recreational, social and personal needs of elderly residents. The Senior Center offers more than 30 classes each week, interesting tours each month and many other special events and guest speakers. The Center is one of the designated Milwaukee County senior meal sites and boasts a well-equipped computer center for member’s use. The Center is located at 7001 W. National Ave. and is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

In addition to health and senior services, the West Allis Health Department oversees the operations of the West Allis Farmers Market. This Market is one of the oldest established farmers markets in Wisconsin and has operated continuously for the past 80 years at 6501 W. National Ave., in the heart of the Six Points redevelopment area. It’s also considered a “green” market because all products must be grown or produced locally. The Farmers Market is open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from May through November. In addition, the Market is home to “Marketplace” on Sundays. This is a huge outdoor flea market where people rent the market stalls for a nominal fee to sell their wares.
